Press Freedom Watch: The Shrinking Door to the West Bank

Gretel Ehrlich's Perugia dispatch last month was about the people who keep covering conflict. This month is about what that costs. French RFI journalist Alice Froussard was denied entry and deported by Israel on June 10–11, accused of “supporting Hamas,” amid a broader lockdown on press access to the West Bank. Elsewhere, the Committee to Protect Journalists reported a four-year sentence handed to Tunisian journalist Khaoula Boukrim.

“Courage in covering difficult subjects” is easy to put on a values page. This is what it looks like in practice — and why the Prize names it out loud.
